Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I have been an independent consultant since 1999. I have worked in the Information Technology and computer field since 1985.
What is your primary product or service?
In 2 words:
Data Integration. Whatever it takes. I provide the glue between two or more software packages. Over the past 9 years I have set up hundreds of automated processes that feed database systems from a variety of sources. These processes are typically scheduled to run daily on either a UNIX or Windows platform. Besides having an in-depth knowledge and experience with
SQL, I also know the varied schedulers and scripting languages required to develop rock-solid data loading processes.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have been working with computers since my undergraduate days at Carnegie-Mellon University where I received a B.S. in Civil Engineering. While working for Koppers Co. doing finite element analysis I undertook a project that eventually became a company-wide Lab Information System. This was my first experience working with databases and I haven't looked back. I have undertaken quite a few different types of projects related to databases. I have also completed a number of data migrations from legacy systems. These are very challenging and require an intimate knowledge of the old and new systems as well as understanding the business rules in both areas.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I have found that I have different guiding principles when undertaking projects:
- Listen to the client and fully understand the context. Echo back the requirements in a short document. This simple process saves hours and days of frustration.
- Let common sense drive the project and keep things simple.
- Document the process for the client and for the next person who will work on it. There are too many folks who don't document and this oversight wastes an incredible amount of time and money when maintaining code.
These principles, coupled with my in-depth experience allow me to provide the best bang for the buck.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I typically work at the client site or via VPN from home.
Provide detailed directions to your location

Who owns your company or runs daily operations?

What are your hours of operation?
Whatever the client needs.
